Catalyst system efficiency below threshold. This is an emissions-monitor result, not proof that a catalytic converter or another specific part has failed. The threshold and monitor conditions are defined for a vehicle's engine and emissions calibration. A code reader can report P0420, but that text does not reveal which underlying condition caused the monitor result.

Listed scope: Selected Cadillac CTS (2016–2018), Escalade (2015–2018), Chevrolet Camaro (2016–2018), Corvette (2014–2018), Silverado (2014–2018), Suburban and Tahoe (2015–2018), GMC Sierra (2014–2018), and Yukon (2015–2018). The bulletin also lists engine, VIN, and operating conditions; verify each against the vehicle.
GM describes a specific possible condition involving debris bypassing an air-filter seal. The bulletin is a diagnostic tip for its listed vehicles; it does not establish that this condition explains P0420 on other vehicles.

Listed scope: Some 2010 Tacoma vehicles with the 2TR-FE engine and one of the VDS codes listed in T-SB-0161-13.
Toyota describes a front-exhaust catalyst rattle and/or an illuminated malfunction indicator with P0420 for the stated Tacoma application. The bulletin does not generalize that condition to other years or models.

Listed scope: 2000–2001 Maxima (A33) with California emissions certification; excludes 2000 Federal-emissions vehicles. The bulletin also requires specified ECM part numbers and no misfire or driveability incident.
Nissan's bulletin makes applicability dependent on emissions certification and ECM part number. Those conditions show why the code alone cannot establish that an old bulletin applies to a vehicle.

The cited GM bulletin, for example, documents a possible condition for a limited set of vehicles; Toyota and Nissan bulletins also state narrow vehicle or emissions applicability.
